As November 7th approaches, we want to bring to your attention to an important opportunity to make a real impact on the future of New Jersey’s treasured coastline. All State Assembly, State Senate, and local offices are up for election this November. Governor Murphy and our NJ legislators have fast-racked wind turbine projects, basically industrializing our NJ shore with hundreds of turbines 1000+ feet tall, (the tallest in the world and the closest to shore in the world). 357 of those turbines will line the coastal waters of Long Beach Island. Their height is 4 times the height of our ‘Old’ Barney’ lighthouse. Did you know that these projects are already underway? We need to stop them. Your vote in the upcoming election can influence the course of these projects and their potential consequences for our environment, oceans, marine life, fishing industries, and our electric bills.
Why Should You Care?
It's crucial to be informed about the potential destructive effects they will have:
• Environmental Impact: Wind farm projects have a significant impact on our environment, including disruptions to local ecosystems, migratory patterns and lives of birds, and the overall health of our oceans.
• Marine Life: The construction and operation of wind farms poses significant risks to marine mammals and other aquatic species. As of this date more than 10 dead whales and many dolphins have washed up our NJ shores alone and 70 along the Atlantic coast this year due to the sonar blasts being done by the wind company’s many survey ships. What will happen when they start to pound these behemoths into our ocean floor?
• Fishing Industry: Commercial and sport fishing are integral to our coastal communities. The presence of wind turbines will have a huge affect on our fishing businesses and communities. They have so many impacts for commercial fishing that this industry in NJ will be decimated, along with the income for many coastal families of the fishermen and women.
• Electric Bills: The cost of wind farm projects will definitely impact your electric bills. As the government gives the foreign companies like Orsted more money they will recoup those huge funds from the increased state electric rates and state taxes. In some places in Europe where wind farms generate only a small percentage of the electricity needs, the electric bills have tripled.
• Foreign Companies vs. NJ Ratepayers and Taxpayers One important aspect to consider is that foreign companies are receiving billions of dollars to build these wind farms. These funds are not gifts, they are 'subsidized'. In the end they will recouped from the New Jersey ratepayers and taxpayers.
